The roles within the so-called “staff” of professional football clubs are becoming increasingly diverse. Traditional assistant coaches, goalkeeping coaches, fitness coaches and rehabilitation coaches are now joined by video and match analysts, scouts, psychologists, mental performance coaches, nutritionists and other specialists. These “teams behind the team” are no longer selected solely by the respective managers. Instead, a distinct market has emerged for these specialist professionals who work closely with the team – a market in which I am well connected.
